> Your Next Data Center
(June 10, 2008) About 15 miles from its medical center in downtown San Antonio, Christus Health is building a $23 million data center to house a flood of digital information ranging from patient insurance records to CT scans.
At 48,000 square feet (of which only 7,500 square feet will be used at first), the new facility will dwarf the hospital's current 4,000-square-foot data center, which has been bursting at the seams for years even though the IT staff has made every effort to virtualize servers and otherwise squeeze more life out of it.
> VMware, Microsoft or Citrix: Who's Winning the Desktop Virtualization War?
(June 10, 2008) The old cliché about 'lies, damned lies and statistics' applies perfectly to the numbers being bandied about by the three main application virtualization vendors: Citrix Inc., Microsoft Corp. and VMware Inc.
> Secrets of Successful IT Teams: Socially Connected Employees
(May 9, 2008) In the book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game Michael Lewis tells how in 2002, Oakland A's manager Billy Beane used nontraditional statistics to turn the small-market franchise into a team that could compete with big-market franchises. The story holds lessons for IT management about the importance of understanding objectively the strengths, weaknesses and behavior of individual players in order to build a successful team.
> Customers Frustrated Over Microsoft Virtualization Licensing
(May 29, 2008) For all the flexibility server virtualization affords today's IT departments, there's one type of flexibility IT managers would love to have but aren't likely to get: the ability to save money on Microsoft software licenses. Even when carving a physical server into multiple virtual machines, customers using virtualization probably won't find any way to circumvent the licensing terms set by Microsoft for software running on virtual machines, Forrester analyst Christopher Voce said at Forrester's IT Forum in Las Vegas Friday.
> Rentable Virtual Infrastructure: Right For You?
(June 13, 2008) What gets Matthew Porter, the CEO of Contegix, most excited about virtualization is the technology's ability to solve his customers' problems—most importantly, their needs for better hardware utilization and speedier server provisioning and application delivery.
> Six Secrets of Top-Notch Business Analysts
(May 23, 2008) Most line-of-business execs, project managers and software developers who have worked on application development teams can attest to the importance of good business analysts.
In many instances, in fact, today's business analyst can affect the outcome (good or bad) of a software project. "When business analysts aren't able to carry their weight, it's evident to everybody on the project. They usually know something is going on," says Carey Schwaber, a senior analyst of application development at Forrester Research "I've seen projects where a bad business analyst was the critical failure factor."
Sure, executive boardroom support is key at the kickoff, but the CEO or CIO isn't down in the trenches every day, hammering out compromises, grinding out specs and pushing all involved toward the finish line. "It's funny," Schwaber adds, "we have a lot of prerequisites for success with software projects, and it's not just executive support. It's also good business analysts."
While most employees might have a sense of what a traditional business analyst does, not everyone knows how BAs do their jobs' effectively. "It's easy to understand what their role is," Schwaber says, "but it's hard to understand what makes them good at it or bad at it."
So what do the best business analysts do so well? Here are six critical skillsets and professional characteristics that make business analysts invaluable.
> Virtual machine backup best practices
(May 15, 2008) Virtual machine backup best practices
Jerome Wendt, Contributor
The deployment of virtual machines (VMs) is becoming common for companies of all sizes, but with it comes the challenge of providing the appropriate level of virtual machine backup. Doing full backups to tape for physical servers that host multiple VMs can consume excessive memory and CPU resources, congest network pipes, extend backup windows and even cause backups to fail. To avoid these problems, service providers should introduce new features such as snapshots, implement deduplication backup appliances and avoid specialized versions of backup software, all toward the goal of minimizing management, server overhead and network congestion. In this tip, we'll review three best practices for virtual machine backup.
> Why You Shouldn't Sue Software Vendors--Even If They Deserve It
(May 7, 2008) Most every IT department employee, from CIO to database administrator to project manager, can probably recall a software implementation that took too long, cost too much money and never worked as the software salesman had promised because, they believe, they were sold bad software.
